U.S. Dept. of Education Title III for Staff Development Award

The University of North Texas (UNT) receives $2.7 million for Title III ELL teacher training.  The award is part of a collaborative effort with UNT as the lead agency to provide training to teachers at the Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD and UNT students. The Latino Family Literacy Project will provide direct teacher training for the district and the Bilingual/ ESL department for five years and will train teachers to work with parents at their schools.

The teacher training will culminate with implementing a family engagement program that will teach parents how to read with their kids while developing language and vocabulary skills. The Latino Family Literacy Project will provide 75 teachers at 15 schools with all the tools they need to be successful with parent engagement using a culturally-relevant and meaningful framework with parents.

Student teachers from UNT will also attend the training and will assist the teachers at Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD. The grant pairs teachers and student teachers with mentoring and hands-on experience in literacy and language instruction with Project SUCCESS. Along with training and mentoring, the grant will provide bilingual books in 15 school libraries over the next five years, provided by The Latino Family Literacy Project and Lectura Books.

The Latino Family Literacy Project is an evidence-based program for parent involvement with English language learners. The program meets Title I requirements for parent involvement and Title III requirements for English language learners so that parents can help their kids with reading and English language vocabulary development through the implementation of an at-home, family reading routine.
